Why do you need to renew your contact lens prescription yearly.

A new patient came into our practice the other day upset that his former optometrist would not allow him to re-order his contact lenses. His contact lens prescription had expired and he was due for his yearly eye examination and contact lens re-evaluation. Most contact lens prescriptions are valid for one year. He wanted to know why. I thought this was a great question and it deserves an equally great answer.

After I explained a few of the reasons to him, I decided to write an article about it.

Your eye doctor wants to your eyes to be healthy and stay healthy and would be happy to answer all of your questions and concerns promptly. All you have to do is ask politely (and if you do not understand an answer, it’s ok to ask them to explain things again or in more detail). There are very good reasons behind re-assessing your contact lenses yearly.

Here are a few:

1. CLARITY- Your prescription may have changed and you could improve your visual clarity by ensuring that you are using the most accurate prescription powers possible. Since we use our eyes every waking hour of every day, you are really short-changing yourself by not getting your eyes checked,

Flexible Spending Account benefits.

At Midtown Optometry, Dr. Lee and the staff understand the importance of vision health –
not only for clear vision, but for overall health of the body. "A comprehensive eye health
examination can help in the early detection and diagnosis of potentially life-threatening
conditions," Dr. Lee comments.

"One way to maximize healthcare is to understand benefits that are available to you. For
instance, if you're eligible for Medicare benefits or have unspent money in your flexible
spending account, now is the time to schedule a comprehensive vision and eye health
examination."

To qualify for certain healthcare benefits, like Medicare or Flexible Spending Accounts, vision
exams and eyewear purchases must be made before the end of the year.

Does Your Child Have A Learning-Related Vision Problem? Vision Therapy Can Help.

A large part of learning is done visually.  Reading, spelling, writing, whiteboard work, and computer work are among the tasks students tackle all day long, day after day.  Each involves the visual abilities of seeing quickly and understanding visual information which is frequently less than arm's length from the eyes.

Many students' visual abilities just are not up to the level of the demands of these types of classroom learning situations.

Clear eyesight is not all that is required for close vision tasks.  Youngsters must have a variety of scanning, focusing and visual coordination skills for learning and for getting meaning from reading.  If these visual skills have not been developed, or are poorly developed, learning is difficult and stressful, and youngsters typically react in one of a variety of ways:

  • They avoid near visual work entirely, or as much as possible.
  • They attempt to do the work anyway, but with lowered understanding
  • they often experience discomfort, fatigue, and short attention span.
  • They adapt by becoming nearsighted, or by suppressing the vision of one eye.

Does your child have poor performance at school?

Because of poor schoolwork or trouble learning to read or spell, parents may think their child is lazy or has a low IQ.  Maybe not.  Perhaps the child needs glasses or has a "lazy eye,” something that can only be detected by a thorough eye examination.

Children should have vision test each year.  A child doesn't know that having problems seeing across the room, seeing double, or not being able to focus on things up close, is abnormal.  Only an aware adult can see signs in a child that might warrant an eye examination.

The following are some signs that may indicate your child is having v

Dry, Sratchy, Irritated Eyes? You may have Dry Eye Syndrome.

Dry, scratchy and irritable eyes are the most common symptoms of dry eye syndrome.
Others experiencing dry eyes report blurred vision, excessive eye watering and redness.
Dr. Lee and the staff at Midtown Optometry have seen the number of dry eye cases
dramatically increase in the last couple of years and have been successful at relieving the
symptoms of dry eye syndrome for their patients.

Dry eye syndrome is usually the result of diminished tear production or a lack of fluid on
the surface of the eye:

1. Environment: High altitudes, dry/ windy conditions, and forced heating/
air conditioning can increase the tear evaporation from your eyes.
2. Aging: Tear production decreases with age. Often the volume of constant tears
at age 65 is less than half than at age 18.
3. Incomplete blinking: When you blink, you spread tears across your eyes in a
sweeping motion which guides your tears toward the nose to flow into drainage
ducts. If the tear drainage ducts are over active, then dry eyes and nasal
congestion often result.
4. Contact lens
